Cannabis Art Contest Dragon Flops but Keeps on Smokin’!

 In News & Updates

I recently posted new artwork that I stayed up and worked hard on, every day, for an entire week to finish in time for a Cannabis art contest (judged by Juxtapoz), and I’m proud to say ……..

It was a flop.

Sadly, the ‘Green Dragon’ did not make it to the top 10 (let alone a winning position) however, I can’t say I’m surprised. There were a number of problems with the piece that I knew about from the start, for instance, it wasn’t really ‘psychedelic’ in style or design and it was fantasy themed (which I think always hurts me in terms of being viewed as a real fine artist versus a ‘run-of-the-mill illustrator). Additionally, I’m sure I was competing with artists who have formal training and/or a more unique approach to making art. I’m painfully aware that I’m not making anything that is groundbreaking in terms of my artwork but, in the end, I need to stay true to myself.

I love making dark art and fantasy art and it’s not psychedelic in nature, nor is it groundbreaking in terms of the concept, medium or ideas, but I’m ok with that because in the end, I make art that comes from me and that means something to me. The Green Dragon may have been a flop but I’d like to think he’s still pretty smokin’ anyway!
